Adenoid and Tonsillar Surgery

Adenoid and tonsil surgery are the surgical interventions we encounter most in childhood. Tonsils and adenoids can cause respiratory problems both as a result of infection and as a result of narrowing the airway channels with their enlargement.

Indications for Adenotonsillar Surgery

Frequent bacterial tonsillitis is the most common cause of tonsil surgery. For patients who have five or more acute bacterial tonsillitis and/or adenoids per year, removal of the tonsils and adenoids may be preferred. Surgery may be a solution for adenoid enlargement, which causes persistent nasal congestion and fluid collection in the middle ear.

  • Sleep apnea and sleep breathing disorders

  • Excessive snoring

  • Resistant pharyngitis

  • Frequent otitis media

  • Middle ear diseases

  • Chronic sinusitis

  • Recurrent bacterial acute tonsillitis

  • Throat ache

  • Bad breath

  • febrile seizures

  • Snoring and chronic mouth breathing

  • eating difficulties

  • Abscess development around the tonsils

  • Painful neck and lymph node enlargement

          

How is Adenotonsillar Surgery Performed?

Before deciding on adenotonsillar surgery, it would be best to make an evaluation by listening to the patient's complaints and history, together with the examination. Tonsil and adenoid complaints are evaluated separately, and in some cases, simultaneous surgery may be required for both.

 

During adenotonsillar surgery, the patient's mouth is opened with the help of a metal mouth opener. Surgery can be performed by directly reaching the area through the mouth without making any external incisions.
