“The vast majority of people who say ”I'm going to have nose surgery" are actually referring to one of three different procedures—but these three surgeries are significantly different from each other. Understanding which one is right for you is critical for both managing your expectations correctly and having a productive consultation with your surgeon.
Core Difference: Inside, Outside, or Both?
To summarize the three procedures in one sentence:
- Septoplasty Nose inside corrects — removes the deviated septum that makes breathing difficult
- Rhinoplasty Nose outside corrects — reshapes form, size, and symmetry
- Septorhinoplasty Combine them in the same session
Septoplasty: If You Have Breathing Problems
Septoplasty has one sole purpose: to open the nasal airway. It is performed to correct a blockage caused by a deviated nasal septum (the cartilage and bone structure that separates the two nostrils). It is sometimes performed in conjunction with turbinate surgery.
Is it suitable for a foreigner?
- Nasal congestion that does not resolve despite medication
- Septal deviation with allergic rhinitis
- Cases that should be performed concurrently with sinus surgery
Araştırmalar ne diyor? Birden fazla sistematik derleme ve randomize kontrollü çalışma, septoplastinin tıbbi tedaviye kıyasla tıkanıklık skorlarında ve yaşam kalitesinde büyük, klinik olarak anlamlı iyileşme sağladığını gösteriyor. Hastaların yaklaşık %70-100’ü uzun vadede memnuniyetini bildiriyor — ancak sonuçlar yıllar içinde hafif gerileme gösterebilir.
Rhinoplasty: If You Have a Shape Problem
Rhinoplasty reshapes the externally visible structure of the nose: humps, asymmetry, wide or droopy tips, and post-traumatic deformities. It can be purely cosmetic or include functional nasal valve issues.
An interesting clinical point: Even in rhinoplasty cases that appear to be purely for aesthetic purposes, septal intervention can sometimes be necessary. Research shows that septal surgery can play a “critical” role in realigning and supporting the nasal pyramid, including in cosmetic cases.
Septorhinoplasty: If Both Are Necessary
In cases where there are problems both inside and outside the nose—meaning noses that are crooked, blocked, and misshapen—two procedures are combined in a single session. This situation septorhinoplasty It is being said.
According to clinical series, cases where septoplasty is performed alone constitute only %9-37% of all nasal surgeries. This means that the vast majority of patients actually require a combined intervention.
Is it safe? Evet. Meta-analizler, kombine FESS + septorinoplastinin komplikasyon, revizyon veya semptom tekrarı açısından tek başına yapılan prosedürlerle kıyaslandığında anlamlı bir fark yaratmadığını, memnuniyet oranlarının ise %90’ın üzerinde seyrettiğini ortaya koyuyor.
Which Surgery for Which Condition?
| Clinical condition | Recommended surgery |
|---|---|
| Only internal congestion, deviated septum | Septoplasty ± turbinate surgery |
| Only an aesthetic issue, normal septum | Rhinoplasty |
| A nose that is both blocked and misshapen | Septorhinoplasty |
What Do the Results Say?
A systematic review of 16 studies and 2,270 patients shows that septo/rhinoplasty provides long-term quality of life gains in the physical, psychological, and social domains; it improves both breathing function and self-confidence.
In prospective septorhinoplasty cohorts, significant improvements in both nasal obstruction scores (NOSE scale) and aesthetic satisfaction are reported starting from the 6th month.
Result
Nose surgery is not a single procedure. Whether your problem is inside, outside, or both will determine the correct surgery.
During the examination, we evaluate this together: we plan the most suitable approach based on the endoscopic examination, analysis of your complaints, and your expectations.
