Which endoscopic examinations are done at the consultation?
In the clinic I assess the nose, throat and ear with a thin endoscope: nasal endoscopy (inside the nose), oto-endoscopy (the ear) and videolaryngoscopy (larynx and throat — used not only for the vocal cords but for other conditions in this region). We can also make a first assessment of hearing with tuning fork tests (Rinne, Weber). For most patients this is completed in a few minutes in the office, with no extra preparation.
Anaesthesia is generally not needed. For patients with a sensitive throat and a strong gag reflex, we can lightly numb the mouth with a soothing spray during videolaryngoscopy; for patients with very enlarged turbinates, a medication applied inside the nose shrinks the blood vessels and lightly numbs the area, making the examination more comfortable. The procedure takes about 4 minutes on average.
Endoscopic examination and ear cleaning are part of a routine ENT assessment.
Which procedures are performed in the clinic?
Procedures such as ear cleaning, removal of a foreign body, abscess drainage and treatment of a nosebleed can be assessed and carried out during the consultation without extra preparation. Before procedures such as radiofrequency, biopsy and naevus excision, a simple blood test is requested — a standard preliminary check so the procedure can be done safely.
If a hearing test is needed, where is it done?
In the clinic, tuning fork tests (Rinne and Weber) give a first, rough idea of hearing — a simple but useful guide. A detailed hearing test with numerical results (audiometry), however, is not done in the clinic; when needed I refer you to a reliable external centre and we go through the result together at the next visit.
