Otoplasty (Prominent Ear Surgery)

Otoplasty is an operation that brings the ear closer to the head and reshapes the cartilage when the ear projects further from the head than normal. It can be performed in children and adults; the incision is hidden behind the ear.

What is the best age for otoplasty?

The best age is just before primary school age — having the operation before the child starts school is preferred for both psychological and practical reasons. By this age the ear cartilage has developed enough to be reshaped. There is no upper age limit; it can be performed safely in adulthood too.

General or local anaesthesia?

Yes, that is the general rule: I prefer general anaesthesia in children to ensure cooperation and comfort, while local anaesthesia is enough in adults.

How long is the bandage worn, and when can you return to school or work?

The dressing stays on for 4–5 days. After that, wearing an accessory of your choice such as a headband, beanie or bandana for up to 6 weeks is recommended to support the ear — this is important for the new shape to settle and to prevent accidental pressure or knocks to the ear.

Is the result permanent, can the ear stick out again?

Permanence depends largely on the choice of suture material. If a permanent suture is used, a monofilament (single-strand) structure can work its way up through the skin over the long term and become visible — which is why I prefer a permanent polyfilament (multi-strand) suture. With techniques that use dissolving sutures, there is a risk that the ear partly sticks out again (relapse) within the first year.
