Recovery After Rhinoplasty: What Does the Research Say?

Published: · Updated: · Op. Dr. Birsen Erzincan

The biggest question on the mind of patients considering rhinoplasty is usually: “How long will I be off work?” Or, if you are planning to travel to Istanbul for surgery: “How many days should I stay?”

In this article I bring together data from current clinical research and practice protocols.

When can you return to daily activities?

Studies of patients who have had functional septorhinoplasty show that routine daily activities can be resumed within an average of 4 days. This of course varies from person to person — the physical demands of your job, the extent of the operation and your individual rate of healing are the deciding factors.

It is not right to give a fixed day for returning to work or school; this decision should be made individually with your surgeon. What is certain is that heavy lifting and dusty or smoky environments need to be avoided in the early period.

When does the swelling go down?

This is one of the things patients most want to know. Three-dimensional volumetric studies show that:

So do not worry if the nose “still looks swollen” after surgery — this is an entirely normal process. It takes at least 1 year to see the final result.

Methods that help reduce swelling

Systematic reviews and clinical guidelines support the following for early swelling and bruising:

When does the splint come off?

General practice is for the splint and stitches to be removed within the first week. In my practice this is usually on day 7.

An interesting research finding: systematic reviews show that a rigid splint is not routinely necessary. Patients treated with taping alone also achieve good shape and low revision rates. In one randomised study, patients with taping had less swelling and bruising around the eyes on days 2 and 7 than those with a rigid splint.

When can you return to sport?

Clinical guidelines are clear on this: contact sports and high-risk activities should be postponed until your surgeon gives approval. This can take weeks or even months.

For low-intensity activity such as gentle walking, the time can be much shorter — but this too should be left to your surgeon’s judgement.

What does the research say about flying?

To be honest: strong published clinical data on this is quite limited. Existing research does not directly address the timing of flights.

My advice to patients who travel to Istanbul for surgery is to plan to stay at least 7–10 days, for the first check-up and removal of the splint. For the return flight, your surgeon’s individual assessment is essential.

Summary: the timeline the research shows

Topic Estimated time
Return to daily activities 4 days on average
Removal of splint and stitches Within the first week
Most of the swelling resolved 1 month (66%), 6 months (95%)
Final result 12 months
Return to sport With the surgeon’s approval; weeks to months

Conclusion

Recovery after rhinoplasty is a process that takes patience but is predictable. Research shows that most patients can return to daily life within a few days, while swelling settles gradually over a period of up to a year.

Every patient is different. We go through the details of your recovery together at the consultation before surgery.
